The Sweet Yellow Kitchen

The best parts of my childhood were spent at a little teal home on Beckley View Avenue in Dallas,Texas. I think I can speak for the Frias/Arispe family when I say that it is the holder of some of the best times of our lives. Each room was something different at least twice. The living room was a dining room, the master bedroom was a living room and the spare bedroom was the master then it was jumbled around and the rooms then had new titles and new memories to be made in them. There were tiny feet that ran through that pier and beam home and laughter filled each nook and cranny. We filled the large yard with horseshoe tournaments, family reunions, Easter egg hunts, water ballon fights, football games, playing in the rain, tree climbing, swinging, playing on the trampoline and even a family argument or two. The living room was once the place we gathered to cheer on the Dallas cowboys, open our Christmas gifts, build forts and take the type of nap you can only get when you feel like you are at home. If you chipped away at that pink paint you could even find our autographs that our little hands signed and small notes that we left as children when the home was renovated. My most favorite room of all was that sweet yellow kitchen where we gathered every Sunday as a family until the day Grandma took her last breath. It’s where we cooked with Grandma, watched Grandpa give himself his insulin shot in absolute fear that it hurt him but also fear that he would give us a shot next. He was such a joker. It’s where we played games together, colored together, pranked each other, talked about our futures together and made the memories we will cherish forever. That house built me. I will forever miss that little house on Beckley View Avenue and two who made that house into a home. It’s because of them and the love we felt within those walls that I decided to carry in their memory and launch my very own Sweet Yellow Kitchen.
